How to Split a PDF: Extract Pages or Break It Into Smaller Files
Split a PDF by page ranges, into single pages or every few pages, and pick the right method for email limits, upload portals and sharing only what's needed.

A bank asks for "the last three months of statements" and you have a 40-page annual PDF. An upload portal rejects anything over 5 MB. A colleague only needs the signed page of a contract. In each case the answer is to split a PDF: take the pages you need and save them as a new, smaller file.
Here's how to do it quickly, which split method suits which job, and a few habits that keep the result tidy.
Three ways to split#
| Method | What you get | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Page ranges | One file per range, such as 1-3 and 10-12 | Pulling out specific sections or chapters |
| Every page | One file per page | Separating a batch of scanned receipts or certificates |
| Every N pages | Equal-size chunks | Upload limits, sharing long scans in parts |
How to split a PDF online#
- Open the Split PDF tool and choose your file.
- Look at the page thumbnails to find what you need. Scanned documents are easy to misjudge by page number alone.
- Type the ranges, for example
1-3, 7, 10-12, or choose "every page" or "every N pages". - Download the new files.
The file is processed in your browser, so it doesn't need to be uploaded to a server. That matters for bank statements, ID copies and contracts.
Splitting on a phone#
The same page works in a mobile browser. Pick the PDF from your downloads or cloud storage, enter the ranges and save the results. Thumbnails are smaller on a phone, so zoom in before choosing pages from a dense scan. If you split files often, adding Tekservix to your home screen makes the PDF tools open like an app; our install guide shows how.
Common jobs, step by step#
Send only part of a bank statement#
Find the pages that cover the months requested, split them out as one range, and name the file clearly: Statement-Jul-Sep-2026.pdf. Sending only what was asked for is quicker for the reader and exposes less of your financial history.
Separate a batch scan#
If you scanned 30 receipts in one go, split "every page" and you get 30 single-page PDFs you can file or attach to expense records one by one. If each receipt is two pages, use "every 2 pages".
Meet an upload limit#
Portals for visas, tenders and university applications often cap the size of each file. Split a long scan into parts, check each part's size, and label them "Part 1 of 3" and so on. If a single page is still too big, compressing it usually fixes that; see our guide to compressing a PDF without losing quality.
Share one signed page#
When a contract is signed on its final page, some people only need proof of the signature. Extract that page. Keep in mind the page alone doesn't show what was agreed, so send the full contract when the other side needs the terms.
Split, then merge: rearranging a document#
Splitting and merging together let you rebuild a document. Pull out the pages you want from two or three files, then combine them in a new order. A typical case is a job application: the CV from one PDF, two certificates from a scan, and a reference letter from an email attachment, merged into a single tidy file. Our guide to merging PDF files covers the second half of that process.
Removing pages vs splitting#
If you want the same document minus a few pages, such as blank pages from a scan or a cover sheet, deleting those pages is simpler than splitting and merging. See how to delete pages from a PDF. Split when you need several new files; delete when you want one file with less in it.
Name files so they make sense later#
- Include what it is and the date or period:
Invoice-INV-0187-Oct-2026.pdf. - Number parts in order:
Tender-Part-1-of-3.pdf. - Avoid names like
scan0001(2).pdf. Whoever receives it has to open it to know what it is.
Check the result#
Before sending, open each new file and page through it. Look for three things: the right pages, the right order and the right orientation. A sideways page in a scan is easy to fix with a rotate tool before you share it; our note on rotating PDF pages explains how to make the change stick.
Is it safe to split a PDF online?#
It depends on where the processing happens. Some services upload your file to their servers, process it there and keep it for a period. Browser-based tools do the work on your device, so the document never leaves it. For personal and financial documents, the second approach is the safer one. Our article on whether online PDF tools are safe lists what to check before using any service. For background on the format itself, the PDF Association's specification archive is the authoritative reference.
Troubleshooting#
- The tool asks for a password: the PDF is encrypted. Open it with the password first and save an unlocked copy if you're entitled to.
- Pages look blank after splitting: the original may use unusual fonts or layers. Try opening it in a different viewer and saving it again as PDF before splitting.
- The split files are almost as large as the original: shared resources such as fonts and large images are copied into each part. Compress the parts afterwards if size matters.
Frequently asked questions
Does splitting a PDF reduce quality?
No. Splitting copies the existing pages into new files without re-compressing them, so text and images look exactly as they did in the original.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Only if you know the password. Open or unlock it first with the password, then split it. Tools that claim to split protected files without the password should be avoided.
How do I split a PDF into equal parts?
Use the "every N pages" option. A 60-page scan split every 20 pages gives you three files of 20 pages each, which is handy for upload portals with page or size limits.
